What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is often caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis compressing the nerve root. Our specialists use complimentary MRI reviews to pinpoint the source of compression and create an effective plan to relieve your leg pain.

Classic Sciatica Symptoms

The hallmark of sciatica is pain that travels down one leg:

  • Sharp, burning, or electric-shock-like pain
  • Pain that worsens with sitting or coughing
  • Numbness and tingling in the leg or foot
  • Muscle weakness in the affected leg
  • Localized pain in the buttock area
Path of the sciatic nerve from the lower back down the leg

What Causes Sciatica?

Lumbar herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis are the primary causes. Pregnancy and piriformis syndrome can also contribute to sciatic nerve irritation.

Non-Surgical Recovery for Sciatica

Most cases of sciatica resolve with targeted conservative care.
  • Physical therapy and nerve gliding exercises
  • Epidural steroid injections to reduce inflammation
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Activity modification to avoid triggers
  • Lumbar stabilization training

Decompression Surgery for Sciatica

If pain is severe or neurological function is threatened, minimally invasive microdiscectomy can provide rapid relief by freeing the nerve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sciatica a condition or a symptom?

Sciatica is a symptom, not a disease. It refers to pain along the sciatic nerve, caused by an underlying issue like a herniated disc or spinal stenosis.

How long does sciatica usually last?

Acute sciatica usually resolves in 4 to 6 weeks. Chronic sciatica persisting longer than 3 months may require injections or surgery.

What is the best stretch for sciatica?

The Piriformis Stretch (Figure-4 stretch) is effective if the muscle is tight. Nerve glides (flossing) also help mobilize the nerve.

Can sciatica affect both legs?

Yes (Bilateral Sciatica). This is rarer and can indicate central spinal stenosis or cauda equina syndrome, which requires urgent evaluation.

Does walking help sciatica?

Generally, yes. Walking helps reduce inflammation. However, if walking significantly increases leg pain (neurogenic claudication), it may suggest spinal stenosis.
