What Conditions does Posterior Cervical Fusion Surgery Help Ease?
This procedure may help with:
How We Perform Posterior Fusion
- General anesthesia is administered, and the patient is positioned face down
- A midline incision is made on the back of the neck
- The surgeon removes any bone spurs or thickened ligaments compressing the nerves
- The bone surfaces of the vertebrae are prepared (roughened) to accept the graft
- Bone graft is placed along the spine to bridge the vertebrae
- Instrumentation (screws/rods) may be used to hold the spine while it fuses
Benefits of Posterior Cervical Fusion Surgery
- Stops painful motion at arthritic spinal segments
- Effective for treating multiple levels of compression simultaneously
- Prevents spinal cord damage from instability or stenosis
- Can be combined with anterior surgery for complex deformities
- Restores stability to the cervical column
Recovery Timeline
Patients typically spend 2-3 days in the hospital. Discomfort in the back of the neck is common initially but improves rapidly. You will likely wear a neck brace for support. Walking is encouraged immediately. Physical Therapy starts gradually to prevent stiffness in the shoulders and upper back. Most patients report relief from their pre-op arm pain and numbness almost immediately after the decompression.
