Innovative Solution for Complex Shoulder Problems
This procedure is particularly effective for patients who are not candidates for traditional shoulder replacement due to irreparable rotator cuff tears. The reverse design provides excellent pain relief and functional improvement, allowing patients to regain overhead motion even when the rotator cuff cannot be repaired. At Mountain Spine & Orthopedics, our shoulder specialists are experts in this advanced technique and use it to restore function for patients with complex shoulder problems.

The Reverse Replacement Technique
- Following consultation and diagnostic imaging, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia
- An incision is made at the front of the shoulder
- The damaged humeral head is removed
- A metal socket component is attached to the humerus
- The glenoid is prepared and fitted with a metal ball component (reversed from normal anatomy)
- The components are tested for proper fit and range of motion
- The incision is closed, and the shoulder is placed in a sling
Benefits of Reverse Shoulder Replacement

- Restores overhead motion even with rotator cuff tears
- Allows the deltoid muscle to power the shoulder

- Improves ability to perform daily activities
Recovery Timeline
Recovery from reverse shoulder replacement follows a structured rehabilitation program. A sling is worn for 4-6 weeks. Physical Therapy begins early with passive motion and progresses to active motion and strengthening. Most patients experience significant pain relief and improved function within the first few weeks. Full recovery typically takes 3-6 months. Patients can usually return to most daily activities, though heavy lifting and high-impact activities are generally avoided.
